Scripture& Discernment

Scripture& Discernment
Luke Timothy Johnson begins his study of the practical issue of how decisions are made in the church by admitting to a bias: that there ought to be a connection between what the church claims to be, central church nazarene and how it does things. Because the church claims to be a community of faith, it does not reach decisions simply on the basis of good management policy, or the analysis of market trends, or efficiency, or even ideological consistency, but in response to God`s activity in the world that presses upon us central church nazarene and urges us to decision. Faced with how to respond to God`s leading, the church decides what to do on the basis of two realities: Scripture central church nazarene and discernment. Because it calls the church into being Scripture is the fundamental authority in the church`s life. Yet it is not enough for a congregation simply to turn to the Bible when a decision must be reached, for Scripture does not directly address all issues which face the church today, central church nazarene and those it does often reflect greatly differing historical central church nazarene and social contexts than our own. Thus, added to the authority of Scripture in the church`s decision making is a process of discernment, in which the members of the community, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, recall how God has worked in their lives as individuals central church nazarene and as a community central church nazarene and discern together God`s direction for the future. Johnson argues that this very pattern of decision making can be found in Scripture itself, notably in one of the central events of the book of Acts. Beginning with the conversion of Cornelius central church nazarene and culminating in the Apostolic Council of Acts 15, we see how a string of smaller narratives combine to tell the story of God`s movement within their midst, central church nazarene and how thisnarrative became the basis for the reinterpretation of Scripture central church nazarene and the inclusion of Gentiles into the fellowship of the church. Looking at a number of thorny issues facing the contemporary church, Johnson demonstrates how the interaction of Scripture central church nazarene and discernment can central church nazarene and must become the

The Pontiff In Winter

The Pontiff In Winter
Over more than a quarter of a century, John Paul II has firmly set his stamp on the billion-member strong Catholic Church for future generations central church nazarene and he has become one of the most influential political figures in the world. His key role in the downfall of communism in Europe, as well as his apologies for the Catholic Church s treatment of Jews central church nazarene and to victims of the Inquisition, racism, central church nazarene and religious wars, won him worldwide admiration. Yet his papacy has also been marked by what many perceive as misogyny, homophobia, central church nazarene and ecclesiastical tyranny. Some critics suggest that his perpetuation of the Church s traditional hierarchical paternalism contributed to pedophiliac behavior in the priesthood central church nazarene and encouraged superiors to sweep the crimes under the carpet. The Pontiff in Winter brings John Paul s complex, contradictory character into sharp focus. In a bold, highly original work, John Cornwell argues that John Paul s mystical view of history central church nazarene and conviction that his mission has been divinely established are central to understanding his pontificate. Focusing on the period from the eve of the millennium to the present, Cornwell shows how John Paul s increasing sense of providential rightness profoundly influenced his reactions to turbulence in the secular world central church nazarene and within the Church, including the 9/11 attacks, the pedophilia scandals in the United States, the clash between Islam central church nazarene and Christianity, the ongoing debates over the Church s policies regarding women, homosexuals, abortion, AIDS, central church nazarene and other social issues, central church nazarene and much more. A close, trusted observer of the Vatican, Cornwell combines eyewitness reporting with information from the best sources in central church nazarene and outside the pope s inner circle. Always respectful of John Paul s prodigious spirit central church nazarene and unrelenting battles for human rights central church nazarene and religious freedom, Cornwell raises serious questions about a system that grants lifetime power to an individual vulnerable to the vicissit...
